Peacock is the rookie of streaming services, only gaining its start in 2020. However, Peacock is in full swing, regularly releasing a host of great movies from a variety of time periods and genres. It doesn’t seem like it’ll be long until Peacock is right up there with the big dogs such as Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video. Every month, Peacock adds a huge crop of movies on the first, then sprinkles more new releases throughout the following weeks to keep streamers with plenty of new content.
While many of Peacock’s television shows are original content for the streaming service, the movies are more likely to be classic favorites. March 2023 in particular leans a lot on the 1990s for fan-favorite movies, like Jurassic Park. Peacock does offer a few new releases that fans might have seen in theaters more recently though, like the Oscar-nominated Puss in Boots 2.
Back To The Future Trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990)Available to stream March 1
Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd charmed audiences with the first Back To The Future movie released in 1985. While the sequels might not be as beloved as the first, the stories create a neat arc for Marty McFly (Fox) and the scientist who figured out how to use trash to power a time-traveling car. All three movies get added to the Peacock streaming catalog for March.
Death Becomes Her (1992)Available to stream March 1
Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, and Goldie Hawn are all titans in the acting world. The trio of legends were together for one movie in 1992. The comedy and horror of Death Becomes Her still holds up, even today. In the dark comedy, Streep and Hawn play rivals (one an actress, one a writer) for the affections of Willis, and they both learn about a way to achieve immortality in hopes of one-upping each other. The result is that they both end up in repeatedly worse shape, but still living with the price they paid. The movie has become a cult classic.
How To Train Your Dragon (2010)Available to stream March 1
This children’s movie turned dragons into allies. Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) just wants to be a fierce Viking warrior like his father. When that’s not allowed, he uses an invention to bring down a dragon in battle and finds a new friend instead of an enemy. The movie opened up a fantasy world with sequels and a television series. The series, which stars Jeremy Shada as the new main character’s voice, is also available to stream on Peacock.
Minority Report (2002)Available to stream March 1
While time travel movies and television shows ask how the past might affect the future, Minority Report asks what happens when someone hasn’t lived the future, but already knows what’s going to happen. In it, a special police force stops crimes before they happen, but when a police officer himself, played by Tom Cruise, is wanted for a murder he hasn’t committed yet, things get a little more action-packed. Since the movie, which itself is inspired by a Phillip K. Dick story, many other movies and shows have played with similar ideas.
Mamma Mia (2008)Available to stream March 1
Not all movie lovers enjoy musicals, but Mamma Mia is certainly an infectious one. So much so that it earned a sequel that doubled as a prequel and fans have been calling for a Mamma Mia trilogy. Using the music of Swedish pop group ABBA to tell the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her desire to meet her dad before her wedding, Mamma Mia weaves a both hilarious and heartfelt tale of love, friendship, and family. It provides a fun break from the more fast-paced action movies or thrillers added to the platform in March.
The Sixth Sense (1999)Available to stream March 1
Though some will argue that The Sixth Sense isn’t as enjoyable once they know the twist, the movie is full of top-notch acting and storytelling. Bruce Willis stars as a child psychologist who begins working with a young boy (Haley Joel Osment) that can see the dead. The movie features some of the tensest build-ups to reveals and jump scares without being an outright terrifying thriller. It’s still widely regarded as M. Night Shyamalan’s best movie.
A League Of Their Own (1992)Available to stream March 1
There’s no crying in baseball is one of the most oft-remembered lines in the movie about the women who were part of the first women’s professional baseball league. Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, and Bitty Schram played women with very different motivations to join a baseball team during World War II. While the movie is inspired by real events and real people, much of what’s included is fictional. The movie is so beloved, however, that it earned a remake of sorts. Amazon now has a series inspired by the same events.
Jurassic Park Trilogy (1993, 1997, 2001)Available to stream March 3
Jurassic Park was a game-changer for movies when it released in 1993. The massive animatronic dinosaurs used looked so life-like that people wondered if Steven Spielberg had actually done the impossible and brought extinct creatures back to life. Jurassic Park’s T-Rex escape is a perfect scene. The first two movies in the trilogy were based on Michael Crichton’s novels Jurassic Park and The Lost World. The third incorporated aspects of those novels that didn’t make it into the first two movies. While the first movie is undoubtedly the best of the trilogy, they are all available on Peacock beginning March 3. Even Jurassic World (2015), the start of the next chapter of the franchise, is available to stream on Peacock.
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (2022)Available to stream March 10
One of the few truly new releases to Peacock in March also happens to be one of the best. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is a sequel to the previous Puss In Boots and a spinoff (and possibly the best) of the Shrek movies. Antonio Banderas returns to voice the titular feline. The movie sees the cat grappling with his own mortality, learning that he’s used up eight of his nine lives, and seeking out his “last wish” to restore the lives he’s lost. The film is beautifully animated, incredibly acted, and full of pathos that adults appreciate as much as kids. The movie earned nominations for the 2023 Oscars, Golden Globes, and Annie Awards, demonstrating that Hollywood loves it as much as audiences did.
The Hunger Games Franchise (2012-2015)Available to stream March 31
Peacock will close out March with some of the best young adult dystopian movies of the last decade. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay divided fans and slowed the pacing of the story down quite a bit, but that doesn’t change the fact that Hunger Games and Hunger Games: Catching Fire are two of the most fascinating stories of war and rebellion in the modern day. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes an accidental revolutionary when she doesn’t play by the rules in a competition that pits teenagers up against one another in a battle to the death. Part of what made the story so appealing, and what makes it endure, is that Katniss never wanted to be a hero. Katniss just wanted to survive, but in order to do that, she had to take a stand.
